Q: What is the program deadline to apply?
A: There is no hard deadline for application. After the first 50 successful matches between a company and fellow have been made, no more applications will be accepted. Because this is the first year this program has been offered, we are uncertain as to how quickly the positions will fill up.
Q: Does NSF or ASEE help select applicants?
A: The host company is responsible for selecting applicants. However, before signing employment agreements, ASEE will ensure that both the company and applicant are eligible to participate.
Q: As a potential applicant, I fit the eligibility requirements for the program, and know of a company that would like to bring me on. However, they do not have any listed opportunities on your site. How should I proceed?
A: Only NSF Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) participating companies are eligible to participate in the program. If they are eligible they will be contacted by ASEE to participate. Please do not contact other companies inviting them to participate.
Q: As an applicant, if I apply for a specific research opportunity, when will I hear back as to whether I will be selected or not?
A: Applicants are encouraged to be in touch with the listed contact associated with the position for which they are applying. Companies are asked to let all applicants for their positions know about their application status. ASEE will not inform applicants regarding their selection status.
Q: How is company and applicant eligibility determined?
A: To be an eligible company, you must be an active NSF Small Business Innovation (SBIR) participating company. ASEE will notify you if you are eligible. To be an eligible fellow applicant, at the time of fellowship you must be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident, and have earned a PhD in a STEM-related field supported by the NSF within the last three years. Ph.D. candidates may apply but may not begin the fellowship until the degree is completed.
Q: I am a company and there is someone who has applied that I would like to bring on. What do I do next?
A: First, alert the applicant that you are interested in selecting them, and ensure their continued interest. Then, contact ASEE to let us know you are interested in entering into an agreement. At that time, we will verify that the applicantion is complete and eligible. We will then begin sending you and your selected applicant the appropriate agreements to sign.
Q: How is a complete application determined?
A: A complete application is determined as the following:
- Contact Information, Citizenship Status, Academic Background, Awards and Honors, and information for References entered
- Uploaded PDF resume reflecting past work history
- PDF Transcripts uploaded for all institutions listed in Academic Background section
- At least one (1) research proposal submitted for a specific research opportunity
- No less than three (3) submitted references
Q: Am I eligible to apply if I have not already earned my PhD?
A: Applicants must have earned their PhD at the time they begin the fellowship to be fully-considered for the program. PhD candidates may apply for the program but, if selected, may not begin until the degree is completed. Please upload a completed thesis defense form and any transcripts to date.
Q: Am I required to provide proof of citizenship?
A: Yes. At the time of applicant appointment acceptance, the individual must provide either a copy of a U.S. passport, birth certificate, certificate of non-citizen nationality, naturalization certificate, permanent resident card (green card), or other acceptable documentation (to be handled on a case-by-case basis with ASEE).
Q: Can I apply if I have a student or work visa?
A: No. Eligible applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents to participate in this program.
Q: I do not have certain documents in PDF format and do not have a PDF writer installed on my computer. How can I work around this?
A: If you do not have PDF writer on your machine, there are several free sites online that will convert documents in other formats to PDF.
Q: If I am a fellow through this program and have other arrangements for health insurance coverage, can I receive funds associated with health insurance coverage?
A: No. Through this program, funds will only cover enrollment in ASEEÕs health care program.
