SBIR Award Title

SBIR Phase II: Water and Food Analysis by Non-Uniform Electroosmotic flow

SBIR Award Abstract

This award is funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Public Law 111-5). This Small Business Innovation Research Phase II project will result in a prototype portable instrument for water quality analysis. The Phase I SBIR project was designed to show the feasibility of a new technique for separating uncharged polymers; this objective was met with remarkable quantitative accuracy, setting the stage for this Phase II prototype project. The underlying Phase I effort was based on stochastic mathema... more

Description

OndaVia is a small, innovative microfluidics company dedicated to changing the way people identify waterborne contaminants. The Company uses surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy to rapidly detect water contaminants, such as oil-spill related hydrocarbons, using a field-ready measurement system. Our disruptive technology will revolutionize the water industry by eliminating time-consuming, expensive laboratory work.

OndaVia seeks an exceptional research scientist to measure, optimize, and improve the SERS response of our proprietary technology for disinfection by-products. This project will include identifying surface treatments that may improve the SERS response, followed by demonstrating the system’s capabilities in terms of detection limit, reliability, and repeatability. The candidate will aid the engineering staff with optimization of the Raman/SERS system, as well as characterizing its detection capabilities and repeatable performance.

Desired Knowledge

Requirements:
• Experience with Analytical Chemistry techniques
• Experience with Optical Systems, Fluorescence Detection, and/or Raman Spectroscopy
• Proficient with 3D CAD, FEM software
• Self-starter
• Excellent verbal and written skills
• Desire to work in a fast-paced, start-up environment
• Background in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering

Excellent candidates will have the additional qualifications:
• Proficient with Autodesk Inventor software
• Programming experience, especially in C/C++
• Knowledge about processing large, noisy data sets
