SBIR Award Title

SBIR Phase II: Using Data Mining to Optimally Customize Therapy for Individuals with Autism

SBIR Award Abstract

The broader impact/commercial potential of this Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II project will revolutionize the treatment of individuals with autism. One of every sixty-eight US children has autism (over 1.1 million). The estimated cost of providing Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy to those who could benefit is $7.5 billion dollars annually. Societal impacts include: 1) more individuals with autism across the globe will receive treatment regimens that will enable them to live more fulfilled lives ... more

Fellow will assist in developing and evaluating ways that transformative technology can improve ABA-based autism therapy. Activities include such things as analysis of current practice and technologies to identify deficits and opportunities; providing direction for specification of technology to remedy deficits or take advantage of opportunities; writing research proposals; conducting on-site research; coordinating researchers; analyzing results; publishing finding; attending conferences to present findings.

Desired Knowledge

Deep knowledge of ABA and its application in autism therapy. Clinical experience is essential, especially in the use of ABA for skill acquisition. The combination of a strong IT and behavioral theory background would be ideal; however, as a minimum, very strong interest in applying information technology to assist in improving ABA therapy is required. Strong research stills are required: must be able to review the literature, develop research hypothesis, develop experiments, conduct experiments, collect and analyze data, and interpret the results. Expertise or the strong desire to develop expertise in proposal writing will be essential. Ability to conduct research and coordinate research at multiple sites.
